Healing from the Shadows: Stewart Thompson’s Story of Courage and Advocacy

In this compelling episode of Chatter That Matters, host Tony Chapman welcomes Stewart Thompson, a survivor and advocate who transformed decades of silent suffering into a powerful voice for change. This episode shines a light on the lifelong impact of childhood sexual abuse, the challenges of addiction and self-sabotage, and the resilience required to reclaim one’s life and help others do the same.

Stewart Thompson openly shares the hidden wounds he carried through his childhood and into adulthood, exposing how trauma relentlessly threads through every aspect of life. With raw honesty, he describes hitting rock bottom and making the agonizing choice to either seek help or give up completely:

“I only knew two feelings. One was being numb and the other one was being high. If anybody’s ever experienced any kind of trauma… it doesn’t matter whether you’re male or female. The feeling was so bad, uncontrollable, that it brought me to the suicidal thoughts.”

After finding support at The Gatehouse—a safe haven for survivors—Stewart Thompson emerged not just as a participant but as a leader, facilitator, and the founder of Survivors Council Canada. He now advocates for policies and resources that address the needs of survivors nationwide.

“Just listening is probably the biggest skill. And no judgment.”

Finding Strength and Giving Back

This episode goes beyond recounting trauma; it details Stewart Thompson’s ongoing process of healing, learning grounding techniques, and setting boundaries. Listeners will discover the importance of support, self-care, and speaking out, with actionable advice for those seeking healing or wanting to support survivors.
