Jon Cornish Chatter That Matters

In this compelling episode of Chatter That Matters, Tony Chapman sits down with Jon Cornish, former Canadian Football League (CFL) player, to unpack his remarkable journey. From overcoming identity struggles to achieving football stardom and ultimately becoming a dedicated community leader, Jon Cornish’s story is both motivational and enlightening.

A Foundation of Resilience and Support

Jon shares the invaluable lessons from his mother, a music teacher and priest, who instilled in him the values of hard work and resilience. Despite her initial worries about football, she became a steadfast supporter of Jon’s career. He recalls, “My mother not only taught me to play the piano but also how to persevere despite the odds stacked against us.”

Football Success and Identity Struggles

Jon delves into the challenges of being the only black child in his school and how seeing Donovan Bailey win an award inspired him to excel in athletics. After sending out 100 VHS tapes to American universities, Jon chose the University of Kansas and later had a stellar career with the Calgary Stampeders. Despite NFL offers, he remained loyal to the CFL, becoming an icon and ambassador for the sport and the city of Calgary.

Leadership and Community Impact

Jon discusses his transition from football to becoming a financial advisor and advocate for black professionals. As the founder of Calgary Black Chambers, he’s committed to addressing social and economic disparities. “I believe in starting at the bottom and being open to learning. Every challenge is an opportunity to elevate others and create meaningful change,” Jon emphasizes.

Looking Ahead

Even after retiring from football and facing "award fatigue," Jon remains focused on contributing value to society. Now the youngest Chancellor at the University of Calgary, he works on advancing causes for social justice and economic opportunities.
