In this very special episode of Chatter That Matters, I, Tony Chapman, invite you to join me as I reflect on the past, draw lessons from history, and explore the choices that can define Canada’s future. By revisiting the Roaring Twenties and comparing it to our own tumultuous times, I ask an essential question: is our destiny shaped by chance, or do we have the power to choose our way forward?
As we hit the halfway mark of this decade, I walk through some of the events that have shaped our world—the shock of 9/11, the 2008 financial crash, China’s rise, the Arab Spring, and more recent challenges like COVID-19 and global conflict. Each moment connects to the struggles we face at home: rising living costs, insecurity, and fractured trust in our leaders.
Why We Can—and Must—Choose Our Destiny
We need to make our destiny a matter of choice, not chance.
I speak frankly about my concerns for our country. Canada was once celebrated for its tolerance, possibility, and open society. Today, I see us struggling with homelessness, reliance on food banks, addiction, and a feeling that communities are slipping through the cracks.
My message is direct - "You must rebuild trust in our democracy and political leaders. This could only happen through transparency, accountability, and fiscal responsibility."
I call on our new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, to earn his legacy by putting Canadians above ideology, championing transparency, and focusing on the ideas and solutions that will move us forward.
