From Family Roots to Global Routes: The Bashak Ilhan Entrepreneurial Journey

Cheryl Hickey joins Tony Chapman on this episode of Chatter That Matters podcast

Meet Bashak Ilhan, the founder blazing new trails in entrepreneurship whose first lessons in business came not from textbooks but from family dinners in 1970s Turkey. On this episode of Chatter That Matters, Bashak joins host Tony Chapman for an unfiltered conversation about what it really takes to launch, scale, and exit companies—starting from scratch and thriving in new markets around the world.

Rewriting the Entrepreneurial Playbook

Drawing on the inspiration of her risk-taking father, Bashak carved her own path, immigrating across continents and never hesitating to start over, even in daunting times. “Business is personal to me. It is. We are all human, and we have feelings. Most of the time, we're missing that part,” Bashak confides as she unpacks the real, often overlooked emotional side of entrepreneurship.

But Ilhan’s journey hasn’t been without setbacks. She openly discusses being left with an empty office and no product after a competitor nearly wiped her out, only to bounce back with ingenuity and a helping hand from a fellow entrepreneur. As she puts it, “I didn't give up. I just allowed myself to be sad for a couple of days or hours, and I searched for different solutions, and I was lucky to find one.”

Building Connection, Mentorship, and Market Success

Now at the helm of her company, Road, Bashak partners with founders not as an agency outsider, but as a “co-founder,” guiding them to tangible results with empathy and financial realism.

“Creating a brand is not finding a name, not even a product or service that you're selling. It is a promise that you're giving to your audience,” she explains, urging entrepreneurs to focus on soul as much as sales.

Bashak also highlights the critical role of international bridges—helping companies break into new markets and reminding audiences that resilience, strategic analysis, and authentic connections are the keys to long-term achievement.

Key Takeaways from Bashak Ilhan

  • Know Your Competition: “In this world, there is nothing that you don’t have a competitor. You need to know your game.”

  • The Power of Human Relationships: Real mentorship and business breakthroughs happen face-to-face, not just online.

  • Resilience and Adaptation: Allow setbacks to teach you, but never let them define you.
